Supporting renal function in CKD
As the fourth most prevalent disease in dogs, CKD presents a severe problem that deserves attention and care to provide optimized quality of life and life expectancy.
CKD consists of the gradual degradation of renal function, with a decrease in normal functional filtering tissue.
Although it is a preeminent pathology in dogs and cats of advanced age, a multitude of factors such as infections, injuries, renal diseases, medications, etc. can appear at any age and/or worsen its condition. It is a degenerative, chronic and irreversible pathology and when it is finally diagnosed clinically, most of the nephrons are non-viable. This generates serious consequences such as a deficient excretion of nitrogenous substances, hyperphosphatemia, loss of proteins, polyuria…
The nutritional treatment of this pathology consists, mainly, in stabilizing the patient by reducing the renal load through the management of adequate levels of phosphorus and proteins, with a high digestibility of these. The use of soluble fibers is especially indicated to favor the intestinal microbiota and to limit its alterations (dysbiosis) which favors the absorption of proteins, to alleviate the increase of permeability that allows the passage of toxins that later have to be eliminated by the kidney. The use of probiotics in appropriate amounts generates a balance and modification that results in a good state of health. Probiotics have an adjuvant function in the elimination of urea, that is, they help the intestinal microbiota to reduce toxin-producing bacteria.
Oxalate stone reduction
Urinary stones are responsible for disease of the lower urinary tract, mainly kidneys and/or ureter. The formation of these stones is mainly due to:
– Concentration of salts in urine
– PH that favors crystallization of the salts
– Time they remain in the urinary tract, among other factors .
The appearance of oxalate stones in dogs is, together with struvite stones, one of the most common pathologies. It is nothing more than the union of an oxalate molecule with another calcium molecule that gives rise to a stable molecule. The great difference in the treatment of this type of calculi is that there is no nutritional solution possible, it is simply a preventive treatment that limits the growth or reappearance of crystals and/or calculi.
What is most advisable is to increase the water intake to obtain a diluted urine, and since this is not entirely possible, you can choose to supplement with wet feed, hydrating the dry feed and regulating the sodium content. Nutritionally, a recipe adapted to this pathology should contain low levels of calcium and vitamin D together with urine alkalinizers.
