Leishmaniasis is an endemic zoonosis that occurs in areas with humid and temperate climates. An ideal example of an area with a high incidence is the Mediterranean basin, as it has the ideal characteristics for the development of the phlebotomine sandfly, the insect responsible for the disease through its bite.

Leishmaniasis is characterised as a potentially fatal disease, with a high incidence of infected dogs. The most obvious symptoms are of a cutaneous nature, such as hair loss and/or ulcers on the skin, seborrhoea,… Although we can also observe abnormal nail growth, eye lesions, fevers, joint pain, anaemia and even some more serious ones such as liver failure and, above all, kidney disease.

It is vitally important to stress that the best treatment against this disease is prevention, with a multitude of means at the owner’s disposal. In the event that the animal has been infected by the bite and has developed the disease, early detection is extremely important, as this will allow all pharmacological means to be made available to combat the burden so that the disease does not progress. With appropriate treatment, the symptoms will ostensibly subside, which does not imply withdrawal of treatment, as an infected dog will become a chronic patient in the most favourable of cases.

Nutritional management of the disease will depend, as with drug therapy, on the stage of the disease. It is important to provide a diet rich in antioxidants, fatty acids and ingredients that promote a strong immune system in the early stages. In addition, drug treatment itself favours the development of urate and cystine stones, which is very common in patients with more advanced disease, so it is vital that they are prepared to mitigate or prevent the development of kidney stones.

Finally, in case of advanced disease with renal failure, the principles should be very similar to a renal diet: high percentage of fatty acids, ingredients and functional foods with anti-inflammatory capacity, adequate levels of phosphorus and proteins and even probiotics that will also help renal function and strengthen the digestive and immune system.
