The nutritional objective of this recipe is to promote liver function in cases of chronic insufficiency.

The liver is a fundamental organ in the metabolic processes related to fats, proteins and carbohydrates. A diseased liver can be totally normofunctional: with only 20-30% health, it is able to carry out its functions normally. Moreover, hepatocytes are capable of regenerating the liver to its normal size in the event of partial removal so that, once this is achieved, they stop reproducing. However, despite their regenerative capacity and high functional capacity, liver disease limits or abolishes this regenerative and functional capacity.

Almost all amino acids are degraded in the liver, and the liver is also involved in the metabolism of lipids, vitamins and trace elements. The liver is an extremely important player in the immune system, both as a barrier and as a detoxifier.

Diagnosis is often complicated due to its high resistance, functionality and symptomatology, so problems are often detected in advanced stages.

Liver diseases can be divided into 2 types:

Acute: they are potentially reversible and occur within a short period of time.

Chronic: unfortunately, they are irreversible. They occur in patients with previous liver disease and cause inflammatory and necrotic changes leading to organ failure.

CH may be due to genetic predisposition, as in the case of Dobermans and some Terriers, with a high presence of copper in the organ. Other causes can be infectious processes, medication or idiopathic.

Nutritional management consists mainly of limiting liver degradation. It is very important to provide non-protein calories, which limit the effort and capacity of the organ, being recommended the contribution through fats. Fat restriction should only occur when there is evidence of poor lipid absorption.

The use of highly digestible proteins, such as dehydrated chicken, hydrolysed chicken, corn gluten, etc. are among the most recommendable, due to their digestibility and amino acid profile, as we saw earlier. The volume of fibre, vitamins B, C and E should also be adapted, and the use of ingredients with choleretic and antioxidant action to prevent oxidation and alleviate liver disease is especially recommended.

The organism is especially delicate in these patients who tend to be underweight, malnourished and even anorexic. Thus, probiotic supplementation is related, indirectly, through the benefits in the assimilation of nutrients necessary for the maintenance of the organism, among other benefits such as the modification of ammonia production, benefits in hepatic encephalopathy, etc.
