When we walk our dog, one of the fears we all have is that, in his eagerness to chase something or explore, he will get away from us and we will end up losing sight of him. Although it is always advisable to keep him on a leash, sometimes it is necessary to let our dog express himself and run freely, so the risk of getting lost is always there. To minimize this type of risk, there are numerous technological gadgets on the market that we can use.
Today we want to recommend to you different solutions that we can use so that, in the case of losing him, that traumatic moment lasts as less as possible.
- Always have our dog with a microchip
In Spain, and in many other countries, it is mandatory that our dog has a microchip implanted, so this should not be a problem. In case of loss, the Police can use a microchip reader to identify the dog, get our data and contact us.
- GPS devices to know our dog’s position
In the market there are GPS devices that allow us to know the position of our dog at all times. These devices are usually small and attached to the dog’s collar. Their main strong point is the accuracy of the position they locate, the range they have and the fact that they are compatible through apps with our cell phone. On the negative side is the battery life, which depending on the device can last between a day and a few hundred hours, having to be aware of its charge every time we go on an outing.
- Apple AirTag and position tags
In the market there are so-called position tags, which are small devices that can be attached to the collar of our dog and allow us to know its position. These tags work differently from a GPS device: at the moment of loss, they can be activated to emit a locator sound or use our cell phone to track their position. Apple has recently launched the Apple AirTag, a keychain-sized positioning device that integrates with our iPhone and allows us to locate whatever it is attached to.
The biggest advantage of this type of device is its price, which is usually lower than that of a GPS and the autonomy of the battery which lasts several months. The downside is that they have less range than a GPS device and do not allow us to know the exact position of our dog, although approximate.
